How the Stroop Test relates to football performance
The Stroop Test
measures three key cognitive abilities that are crucial in football:
- 1. Inhibitory Control
– Ability to ignore irrelevant information (the written word) and respond only to the correct stimulus (ink colour).
On the pitch:
ignoring distractions, crowd noise, opponents shouting, external pressure.
- 2. Processing Speed
– How quickly the brain analyses a stimulus and produces a response.
On the pitch:
rapid decisions in tight spaces, immediate passes, reading trajectories.
- 3. Selective Attention
– Focusing on the correct detail even under cognitive stress.
On the pitch:
choosing the right passing lane, anticipating movements, reacting to game changes.
On screen you will see a colour word
written in a different ink colour.
The player must click the ink colour
, ignoring the written word.
